For many, tanned skin is a symbol of health, beauty and relaxation. But is it really so?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What happens in the skin during tanning, what effect does the sun have on the endocrine system, is there a safe tan and what is currently proven by science?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is tan?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A tan is actually the skin's protective reaction to the sun's ultraviolet (UV) radiation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">These types of rays penetrate the skin and cause damage to its cells at high intensity. In response, melanocytes are activated, which produce <strong>melanin<\/strong> in order to protect themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Melanin can absorb and partially neutralize UV \u200b\u200bradiation, thus helping to protect skin cells from further damage. It is the increase in the amount of melanin that causes darkening of the skin, i.e. the formation of a tan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u10e0\u10dd\u10d2\u10dd\u10e0 \u10d0\u10d6\u10d8\u10d0\u10dc\u10d4\u10d1\u10e1 \u10db\u10d6\u10d8\u10e1 \u10e3\u10da\u10e2\u10e0\u10d0 \u10d8\u10d8\u10e1\u10e4\u10d4\u10e0\u10d8 \u10d2\u10d0\u10db\u10dd\u10e1\u10ee\u10d8\u10d5\u10d4\u10d1\u10d0 \u10d9\u10d0\u10dc\u10e1<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\"><strong>Ultraviolet (UV) radiation<\/strong> is a spectrum of light coming from the sun. Its <strong>UVA<\/strong> and <strong>UVB<\/strong> rays can damage the DNA of skin cells.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\"><strong>DNA<\/strong> is each cell's \"instructions\" that determine how the cell should work, grow, and reproduce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">Under normal conditions, the body has DNA repair mechanisms that repair most of these lesions. However, if the damage is frequent or very intense, not all errors can be corrected. As a result, permanent changes remain in the DNA \u2014 <strong>mutations<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">If such mutations accumulate in genes that control cell growth, division, and destruction of damaged cells, the cell can lose control of growth and eventually develop skin cancer, including <strong>melanoma<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">Darkening of the skin means that the cells have already been exposed to UV radiation and are trying to protect themselves from further damage by producing melanin. <strong>However, melanin can neither provide complete protection nor restore DNA damage already received<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\"><strong>Ultraviolet radiation is a proven carcinogen.<\/strong> According to the classification of the World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), solar ultraviolet radiation belongs to <strong>Group I carcinogens<\/strong>, which means that there is sufficient evidence of its cancer-causing activity in humans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">In addition, UV radiation is also associated with an increased risk of premature aging, photodamage, wrinkles, sagging skin, and dark spots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Important facts<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\"><strong>Cloudy weather does not mean safety.<\/strong> Clouds block only a small fraction of ultraviolet (UV) radiation, so about <strong>80%<\/strong> of UV rays still reach the Earth's surface. Therefore, sun protection is important even in cloudy weather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\"><strong>Damage from UV radiation is cumulative.<\/strong> Each period spent in the sun and each sunburn adds to the previous damage and there is a cumulation of DNA damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\"><strong>Childhood sunburns are particularly dangerous.<\/strong> Studies have shown that childhood and adolescent sunburns, especially blistering sunburns, significantly increase the risk of developing melanoma in adulthood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although the population is more or less informed about the high risks of these possible negative effects of tanning, it still does not lose its popularity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\"><strong>Beta-endorphins<\/strong> may contribute to this - this is a substance that, in response to ultraviolet rays, leads to the emergence of positive feelings, self-confidence, and to some extent even the formation of an addiction to tanning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Is there a positive side to tanning?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although excess UV radiation is associated with significant risks to the skin, sunlight also has several important physiological effects on the body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Vitamin D synthesis in the skin<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">Exposure to the sun's ultraviolet B (UVB) rays produces vitamin D in the skin. <a href=\"https:\/\/endocrinolo.gy\/en\/2021\/09\/29\/d- -\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"3632\" target=\"_self\">Vitamin D <\/a> is important:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>for bone health<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>for muscles<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>for immune system<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>for calcium and phosphorus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also plays a positive role in carbohydrate metabolism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">It is important to note that intense tanning or sunburn is not necessary to get vitamin D.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Sunlight and the sleep-wake cycle<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">Sunlight plays an important role <a href=\"https:\/\/endocrinolo.gy\/en\/2021\/03\/07\/-- % 98-\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2743\" target=\"_self\">in the regulation of the organism's biological clock<\/a> - circadian rhythm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">Getting enough natural light during the day helps the brain to correctly determine the day-night cycle, which contributes to the natural production of <strong>melatonin<\/strong> in the evening and improving the quality of sleep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Melatonin is a hormone involved in sleep-wake regulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Sun light and mood<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">Exposure to sunlight is associated with changes in the activity of neurotransmitters in the brain, including <strong>serotonin<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Serotonin is involved in the regulation of mood, emotional state and sense of well-being. That is why many people feel more energetic and positive on sunny days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Sun lights and hormonal balance<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The relationship between sunlight and various hormonal processes is a subject of active research. There is some evidence that seasonal changes and sun exposure may be associated with changes in certain hormone levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">It is <strong>important<\/strong> that intensive tanning is not necessary to obtain these positive effects.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Does tanning affect the thyroid gland?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">There is currently <strong>scientific evidence<\/strong> and confirmation that tanning in the sun affects the function of the thyroid gland - increases or decreases its production of hormones or changes the effectiveness of levothyroxine in the treatment of hypothyroidism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">if <a href=\"https:\/\/endocrinolo.gy\/en\/2018\/04\/23\/ \/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"325\" target=\"_self\">Hypothyroidism<\/a> is properly controlled and the patient feels well, being in the sun is not limited, following general recommendations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, there are several factors to consider:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Some people with <strong>hypothyroidism<\/strong> may have increased or decreased sensitivity to heat, depending on the individual.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dry skin, which is a characteristic symptom of hypothyroidism, may become more pronounced with intense sun exposure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If the patient has other diseases at the same time or is taking medications that cause photosensitivity, the sun exposure recommendations may differ.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/endocrinolo.gy\/en\/2019\/03\/23\/%9 4\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"708\" target=\"_self\">In the case of hyperthyroidism<\/a><\/strong> the problem may be that at this time people often have <strong>heat intolerance, excessive sweating and increased body temperature<\/strong>. Therefore, discomfort may be more pronounced during hot summer days or prolonged exposure to the sun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Patients whose disease is not yet well controlled should be especially careful, so that high temperature and dehydration do not aggravate the general condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">During <strong>hyperthyroidism<\/strong> it is recommended:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>avoid long exposure to direct sunlight, especially during the hottest hours of the day;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Drink enough fluids;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wearing light, light-colored clothing;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use of sunscreen.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the hyperthyroidism is properly controlled and the patient feels well, being in the sun is not prohibited by following the general recommendations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Autoimmune diseases<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">Although UV radiation affects the function of the immune system, <strong>currently there is not enough evidence to confirm that tanning in the sun improves or worsens the course of autoimmune endocrine diseases<\/strong>. Mechanisms by which UV radiation may affect autoimmune processes have been described in laboratory studies, but these results have not been translated into clinical practice. Hashimoto's thyroiditis<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/endocrinolo.gy\/en\/2019\/04\/20\/__trashed\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"736\" target=\"_self\">Graves' disease<\/a><\/strong>, <strong>Addison's disease<\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/endocrinolo.gy\/en\/2018\/06\/16\/%8 3---1\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"384\" target=\"_self\">Type 1 diabetes<\/a> <\/strong>has not yet been confirmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Graves' orbitopathy<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">With Graves' disease, some people develop <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/endocrinolo.gy\/en\/2019\/04\/20\/__trashed\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"736\" target=\"_self\">Graves' Orbitopathy<\/a> (eye disease)<\/strong>, in which the tissues of the eye socket become inflamed. Patients may experience:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Dry eyes;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Burning or sandy sensation;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tearing;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Increased sensitivity to light (photophobia);<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Incomplete closure of the eyelids;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Protrusion of the eyes (exophthalmos).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bright sunlight, wind, and a dry environment can make these symptoms worse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Therefore, it is recommended for patients with Graves' orbitopathy:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Using quality sunglasses that provide <strong>100% UVA and UVB protection<\/strong>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Using artificial tears on the recommendation of a doctor if you suffer from dry eyes;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun and strong winds;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Drink enough fluids, especially in hot weather.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Thyroid nodules<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Studies conducted to date have not shown that UV radiation from the sun promotes the growth of thyroid nodules, the formation of new nodules, or the transformation of a benign nodule into a malignant one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">Therefore, <a href=\"https:\/\/endocrinolo.gy\/en\/2019\/07\/04\/-%a 4%8 3-\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"847\" target=\"_self\">The presence of thyroid nodules<\/a> in itself is not a reason to limit exposure to the sun. In this case, the recommendations are the same as for any person: avoid intense sun exposure, use sunscreen and avoid sunburn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">If the nodule is malignant or the patient has undergone thyroid surgery, limiting exposure to the sun is usually not necessary either. However, <a href=\"https:\/\/endocrinolo.gy\/en\/2022\/06\/08\/%9 0-% 83\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"5361\" target=\"_self\">In the postoperative period<\/a> it is important to <strong>protect the surgical scar from direct sunlight<\/strong>, because ultraviolet radiation can make the scar darker and more visible. For this purpose, it is recommended to use sunscreen with a high SPF or to cover the scar with clothing, especially during the <strong>first 6-12 months<\/strong> after surgery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Diabetes mellitus and hot weather<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">High temperatures and prolonged sun exposure are of particular concern to people with diabetes, as heat can affect both blood glucose levels and the effectiveness of diabetes medications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The risk of dehydration<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In hot weather, the body loses a large amount of fluid through sweating. In people with diabetes, especially when blood glucose is high, the risk of dehydration is higher because excess glucose increases fluid loss through urine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dehydration, in turn, can cause blood glucose levels to rise and make diabetes more difficult to control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How does heat affect insulin?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Insulin and some other diabetes medications are sensitive to high temperatures. Overheating insulin or leaving it in direct sunlight can change its action and reduce its effectiveness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Insulin shouldn't be stored:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Direct sunlight;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In a closed, hot car;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In a place where the temperature is high.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Heat can alter glucose levels<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">High temperatures, physical exertion in the heat and dehydration affect blood glucose levels. Therefore, during the summer it may be necessary to <a href=\"https:\/\/endocrinolo.gy\/en\/2024\/10\/17\/%8 3--% a1-\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"9311\" target=\"_self\">More frequent glucose control<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Special attention is required:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>During insulinotherapy;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>During prolonged physical activity;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When traveling or in hot climates.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Practical tips for people with diabetes in hot weather<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Drink plenty of fluids unless your doctor has prescribed a fluid restriction.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Monitor your blood glucose levels regularly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Store insulin and other medications as directed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid peak solar activity (around 11:00 AM-4:00 PM).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wear light, breathable clothing and use sunscreen.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Modern diabetes management technologies, such as continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) systems and insulin pumps, greatly simplify glucose control. However, high temperatures and direct sunlight can affect their performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>CGM sensores<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">High temperature, excessive sweating and sunlight may:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Reduce the effectiveness of the adhesive layer of the sensor and cause its premature removal;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Increase the risk of skin irritation;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In some cases, it may affect the accuracy of the device.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is important to protect the sensor in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations during swimming, intense sweating or prolonged sun exposure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Insulin pumps<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The insulin in the insulin pump is sensitive to high temperatures. Overheating may reduce the effectiveness of insulin, causing blood glucose to rise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Special care is required:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>When leaving the pump in direct sunlight;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>While on the beach or in a closed car;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When staying in a very hot environment for a long time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Practical recommendations<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Do not leave the CGM device, pump, or insulin in direct sunlight.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do not leave diabetes devices in a car in hot weather.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If necessary, use special protective bags or thermal cases.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If glucose readings suddenly change and the cause is unclear, consider the possibility of insulin overheating or a device problem.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is important to remember: the heat is not a reason for a person with diabetes to refuse to travel, be in the sun or do activities, although extra caution and the correct use of technology are required in the summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Solarium<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">Tanning beds are a source of artificial ultraviolet (UV) radiation that became widespread in the <strong>late 1970s and 1980s<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">Ultraviolet radiation from both the sun and tanning beds is classified as a Group I carcinogen by the World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">According to studies, <strong>starting to use a solarium before the age of 35 increases the risk of developing melanoma by approximately 47%<\/strong>. In addition, the risk increases with the frequency of tanning bed use and the total dose of UV radiation received.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Solarium is also associated with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>with an increased risk of developing other malignant skin tumors;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>premature skin aging (photoaging);<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>with faster development of wrinkles, pigment spots and loss of elasticity;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>risk of eye damage if appropriate protective equipment is not used.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\"><strong>Sunbeds are not a recommended source of vitamin D<\/strong>. If necessary, the vitamin D level should be corrected with the doctor's recommendation and with the help of drugs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Auto tanning<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">Self-tanning is a cosmetic product that gives the skin a tanned look without exposure to sunlight.
